Day Trip to Saqqara from Hurghada

Overview

Explore Saqqara on a unique excursion from Hurghada

On a sunny morning, we will start our journey from the beautiful city of Hurghada, with the blue waves of the Red Sea, heading for an exciting road trip into the depths of history, to the region of Saqqara, a very important part of the Memphite necropolis, about 40 kilometers from Cairo. Sukkar, the necropolis' idol, is typically the source of Saqqara's name.
The majority of the monuments of ancient Egyptian history, including the tombs of the First and Second Dynasties' monarchs and prominent officials, are held in the outdoor museum Saqqara (ca. 3040-2686 BC), where we can first explore the Step Pyramid, the oldest monumental stone structure in the history of King Zesar (ca. 2686-2667 BC), and the Pyramids of Zesar (ca. 2686-2667 BC). It has pyramids for the most important kings of the Fifth (ca. 2494-2345 BC) and Sixth (ca. 2345-2181 BC) dynasties, with the pyramid of King Wanis (ca. 2375-2345 BC) being the first to inscribe its burial chamber with pyramidal texts intended to protect the king during his journey to the other world.

Saqqara houses a vast collection of royal tombs from the Old Kingdom, decorated with magnificent period scenes and inscriptions. They include tombs from the First Transitional Period (ca. 2181-2055 BC), the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2055-1650 BC) and the New Kingdom (ca. 1550-1069 BC). The tombs of the New Kingdom represent a completely different architectural style than the tombs of Luxor. Among them is the tomb of King Horemheb (circa 1323-1295 BC), who was commander of the army, but was not buried there because, after ascending the throne, In the Valley of the Kings, he carved a tomb for himself.

The day will start with an impressive visit to Saqqara area which is considered one of the most ancient archaeological sites in Egypt. Since the First and Second Egyptian Dynasties, some Egyptian nobles started to build their tombs in Saqqara. One of the first royal structures built in Saqqara was a mastaba built during the reign of King Kha-Sakhmoy, the last king of the Second Dynasty, which is now known as the Director's Bridge. The construction of mastabas and pyramids at Saqqara continued during the reign of the following dynasties, including the following monuments:

The Pyramid of Zoser is an archaeological monument of the necropolis of Saqqara, built during the 27th century BC for the burial of the pharaoh Zoser; it was built for him by his minister Imhotep. The first Egyptian pyramid consisted of six mastabas built one on top of the other, something that represents a huge advance in the design of the tombs of that time, which was limited to a single mastaba.

We'll show you the pyramid of Unas, which has 518 columns, 386 of which on the lower walls represent the days of the leap year in the lunar calendar of ancient Egypt. However, the 153 columns on the ceiling indicate the absolute distance between the earth and the sun as determined by the ancient Egyptian priests. Inscriptions unearthed inside the burial chamber of the pyramid of Unas are thought to provide the first indications of the existence of a written Semitic language, which contains some letters in a Semitic dialect written in ancient Egyptian symbols.

Mereruka's tomb, which was constructed in the shape of a massive mastaba close to the Teti pyramid at Saqqara, is what is known about him.  Also buried there are his wife, Wattekhtahor, and his son, Mereteti, who have their own chambers in the tomb. Measuring 41 meters long and 23 meters wide and consisting of 32 rooms, the mastaba is one of the largest mastabas from the time of the ancient Egyptians. The walls of the majority of the chambers are adorned with etched pictures that show a variety of everyday tasks, such as mining and farming. The tomb is still in good condition and can be visited by visitors in Saqqara

Imhotep Museum This museum was established to honor and immortalize the memory of the ancient Egyptian architect “Imhotep,” the executor of the pyramid group of King Djoser, as the first to erect a pyramidal building and the first to use stone in the implementation of huge buildings, and among the most important archaeological pieces in the museum is the painting of King Onas or Wanis, the last king of the Fifth Dynasty, called the “Famine” painting, which tells the story of sending an army to bring special stones for King Unas.

After your trip is over, we will drop you off at Cairo International Airport so you can catch your flight to Hurghada.
