Today, we will explore Menfe, or Memphis, an ancient Egyptian city that is a World Heritage Site. It was founded in 3200 BC by King Narmer and was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom (Dynasties 3-6). It was the site of the worship of the god Ptah, and its current location is near the Saqqara area, 19 kilometres away. It was known as “the white wall” until the 26th century BC, when the Egyptians named it “Men-nefer”, which the Greeks transliterated as “Memphis”, and the Arabs then called it “Menf”.
During this tour, we will visit the Memphis Open Museum, where you will be impressed by the grandeur of the statues, artefacts, and precious remains from the city's immortal past. We will also admire the statue of Ramses II, an astonishing statue that stands 10 metres tall. We will also visit the marble Sphinx, carved from a single block of marble/alabaster, which is a must-see! In addition, we will learn a lot about ancient Egypt and other historical landmarks in Memphis, which played a prominent role in shaping Egyptian culture and politics.

We will begin our excursion today with a visit to Memphis, a historical gem with a unique geographical location on the border of the Cairo governorate. It was founded around 3100 BC by King Menes to be the political, cultural, and religious centre of the ancient Egyptian capital. Memphis was also known as the ‘White Wall’ or ‘Enp-Haj’, because it housed the great temples of Ptah, the god of arts and crafts. Although the ancient city is now home to historical and archaeological remains, Memphis still enjoys widespread historical fame and offers a glimpse into the greatness of ancient Egyptian civilisation.
During this tour, we will also visit the marble/alabaster statue of the Sphinx in Memphis, which is classified as the largest single statue ever discovered in Egypt, weighing approximately 80 tonnes. It is believed to depict King Amenhotep II or King Ramses II, and symbolises power and wisdom.
We will also see the impressive 10-meter-high statue of Ramses II and learn more about ancient Egypt as we explore other historical landmarks in Memphis, which played a prominent role in shaping Egyptian culture and politics.
