From the center of Cairo, we will set off on an adventurous adventure before sunrise to Alexandria, the bride of the Mediterranean, a city where the magic of the sea blends with history. We will enjoy the cool sea wind and walk past sites that narrate the tales of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian pharaohs.

With Cairo Top Tours, you will have the opportunity to explore the Library of Alexandria, the largest library of its time; it was built by Ptolemy I. It is said to have been founded by Alexander the Great about twenty-three centuries ago and is also said to have been founded by Ptolemy II in the early third century B.C. In 285-247 B.C., the library was subjected to several fires and was completely destroyed in 48 B.C. In 2002, it was rebuilt under the name New Library of Alexandria.

We also offer you an impressive visit to the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, a historical archaeological site located in Alexandria, in the Kom el-Shaghafa area, south of the Mina el-Basal neighborhood, and is one of the most important cemeteries in the city, as well as being considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World. The cemetery consists of a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues, and archaeological remains of the Pharaonic funerary cult, and due to the period, many elements of the catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa combine Roman, Greek, and Egyptian cultural points.

Then we headed to the Pompay Pillar, an ancient Roman column located in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, and is one of its most famous monuments. It was erected on the hill of Bab Sidra, between the current Muslim burial area known as the Column Tombs and the ancient plateau of Kom al-Shawqafa. It is about 27 meters high and is made of red granite stone. It is the last surviving vestige of the temple of the Serapeum erected by Postumus. The exact date of construction of this column has not been determined, but it dates back to Roman times, and it is said that this column was dedicated to Christianity after its victory in Alexandria over Miriam in the Battle of the Shirt The Sawari Column is the fifth tallest monument as a column of Roman victory after the Column of Trajan.

We concluded our one-day adventure to Alexandria from Cairo with an unforgettable visit to the Quitbay Citadel. This citadel was built in 882 / 1477 AD. on the site of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria, at the eastern end of the island of Pharos, at the end of the Mamluk state, and is a free-standing building 150 m long or less, consisting of three floors; the first is square in shape, the second octagonal, and the third circular, and the upper part of the lighthouse is covered by a dome and topped with a statue of the god Poseidon, god of the seas and oceans, with the famous triple fork of the Greeks.

Itinerary

Enjoy one of our special day trips, which allows you to take advantage of every moment of your vacation, to explore one of the most beautiful cities in Egypt, the city of Alexandria, which is known as the bride of the Mediterranean Sea.

Your day starts with a pick-up from your hotel in Cairo at the time agreed with your tour operator. In a modern air-conditioned car, we will transfer you to Alexandria.

We start with a visit to the Qaitbay Citadel, which is located at the tip of Pharos Island, in the area of El Sayyala, in the neighborhood of El Gomrok, at the western end of Alexandria, and is built on the ruins of one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria, which was destroyed in 702 AD after the devastating earthquake during the reign of Sultan Al-Nasser Muhammad bin Qalawun, and Sultan Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qaitbay began to build this castle in 882 AD and completed its construction in 884 AD. As one of the most important castles on the Mediterranean coast, Qaitbay Fortress in Alexandria has been the focus of attention of Egypt's sultans and rulers throughout history.

The next stop on our tour is the Library of Alexandria. Established by Alexander the Great's successors more than 2,000 years ago, the Library of Alexandria is still the largest library of its time and the first known public government library in history. Its 700,000 volumes contain the largest collection of books in the ancient world, including the library of Aristotle and the works of Homer.

After that, we go to the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. which is one of the most important cemeteries of the city of Alexandria. It is called Kom el-Shokafa because of the abundance of pottery and remains of crushers that accumulated in this place. The importance of the cemetery is due to its size, the abundance of its decorations, and the complexity of its layout. It is also one of the clearest examples of the mixture of Pharaonic and Ramanite art in Alexandria and of the best examples of funerary architecture in Alexandria.

We concluded our day trip with a visit to the Pompays of Pillar. It is believed that the name of the column is due to its lofty height among 400 other columns that resemble ship masts, which is why the Arabs called it the Column of the Masts, later changed to the Sawari Column. The Column of the Masts has been wrongly recognized since the Crusades.

After enjoying your excursions of Alexandria from Cairo, you will be returned to Cairo and given a rest on the route.
