Day Trip to Valley of the Whales and Wadi El Rayan

Overview

Enjoy an unforgettable experience during your vacations in Egypt by traveling with us to the Wadi El-Rayan and Wadi El-Hitan Reserve, which are situated in the center of the Fayoum desert. This journey combines the beauty of geological history with the enchantment of nature.

We will begin our incredible tour in Fayoum at Wadi El Rayan, a picturesque natural reserve renowned for its stunning waterfalls and pristine lakes encircled by sand dunes. For those who are more daring, you can attempt sandboarding, observe birds, or just take in the stunning surroundings. These waterfalls are the only ones of their kind in Egypt, and they are natural and not artificial waterfalls, as agricultural drainage in excess of the needs of some Fayoum centers was released to the Wadi Al-Rayyan depression in the 1970s, and the Wadi Al-Rayyan Falls area is one of the most important tourist and aesthetic scenes in which geological monuments, various caves, water, plants, animals, and birds are harmonious, it is a picture of the beauty of nature that natural reserves are famous for in Egypt, and Wadi Al-Rayyan Reserve was declared in 1889.

You will also enjoy a special visit to the Valley of the Whales, which is an oasis of breathtaking beauty, golden sand hills, and eroded rocks that create a charming art painting, but what distinguishes this valley is its treasures buried under the sand, which are whale fossils that tell the story of the evolution of life on Earth, as the desert embraces hundreds of structures of huge whales and various types of marine creatures that were buried under the sand due to violent climate changes. These unique fossils also prove that there were marine whales that were discovered with footprints, which indicates that they transformed from land-walking creatures, which is unbelievable, until UNESCO declared it as the first natural heritage site to be registered in Egypt.

Itinerary

From anywhere in Luxor, we can transfer you to Luxor airport to take your flight to Cairo after that our guide will accompany you in a modern vehicle to Fayoum to start your amazing one-day adventure from Luxor.

We will start our excursion with a visit to Wadi El Rayan, one of Egypt's natural wonders and home to the country's only waterfall. Although the falls are not very tall, they provide a refreshing escape for locals and tourists alike, especially those who have never seen waterfalls in the country before. In fact, the waterfall has been featured in many popular Egyptian movies and videos. The history of Wadi El-Rayan dates back to ancient Egypt, when the famous pharaohs Ptolemy I and Amenemhat I initiated hydraulic projects to create a waterfall in the area. They succeeded in diverting water to the surface of the dried-up lake and transformed the Fayoum oasis into the Garden of Egypt. The waterfall was originally formed by the drainage of sewage from Fayoum's agricultural lands.

Our second place for the day is Wadi al-Hitan, which is an oasis of breathtaking beauty, hills of golden sand and eroded rocks that create an enchanting picture, but what distinguishes this valley are its treasures buried under the sand, which are fossils of whales that tell the story of the evolution of life on Earth, so the desert is home to hundreds of structures of huge whales and various types of sea creatures buried under the sand due to violent climate changes, Wadi El-Rayan is part of the Wadi El-Rayan Reserve, but Wadi El-Hitan was a separate nature reserve, then became part of the Wadi El-Rayan Reserve in 1997, and the larger reserve includes the Wadi El-Rayan waterfalls area, Madoura Mountain, the lower lake area and the Wadi El-Hitan area, which has become a World Heritage Site.

We will also take you to Cairo International Airport at the end of the day so you can catch your flight back to Luxor.
