Your day starts at the port in Alexandria, where a driver and guide greet you for the journey to Cairo. The drive changes the landscape from a coastal metropolis to a silent desert road until the pyramid form shows on the horizon.
Giza need no introductions. The scale speaks itself. Walking the site, you will appreciate the strong stone angles set against sky and approach the Sphinx, somewhat weathered but still strong in presence.
Later, you journey south toward Saqqara. There it's calmer, less frequently visited, with an older kind of stillness. Rising softly from the sand, the Step Pyramid of Djoser is encircled by burial sites and fractured walls that once signified the beginning of royal building in Egypt.
Before starting the return trip, there's a local lunch break—not upscale but clean and friendly. Having spent the day calmly and clearly connected to a site that has been here considerably longer than we have, you are at the port in the evening without event or rush.
