 It was built during the Ptolemaic era, the beginning of which is traced to 237 BC through the reign of king Ptolemaios III, and the completion of which occurred during 57 BC through the rule of Ptolemaios XII.

The temple is referred to the cult of the god whose sky is the god Horus, the god of Horus. It is considered to be the second-largest temple in Egypt after the temple of Karnak in both size and preservation. Its huge walls are adorned with reliefs which show the history of the fight of Horus with his uncle Set, which are crucial in religious and cultural customs.

The Temple of Edfu has become one of the most significant tourist and archaeological attractions in Egypt today and depicts the grandiose of the ancient Egyptian architecture and religious artworks.
