Your guide will meet you to start your tour with us, picking you up from your hotel to visit the Cairo Tower. Built between 1956 and 1961, it was designed by Egyptian architect Naoum Chebib. About 500 Egyptian workers participated in its construction, and it takes the shape of a Pharaonic lotus flower. The cost of its construction reached about six million Egyptian pounds at the time, which was the amount paid by the United States to buy Egypt's position, to no avail. The Americans call the tower “Nasser's Thorn” as a metaphor for the hardness of Egypt's position at this stage.
According to the late historian Jamal Hamad, the Cairo Tower represents the longest “no” in history, as the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser ordered its construction "to say no to American pressure on Egypt to abandon the Algerian cause, as the United States tried to buy Egypt's position with money through its embassies in Egypt via one of its agents. However, Abdel Nasser decided to use this money to build this historic edifice."
The tower was renovated in 2006 at a cost of 15 million pounds, with a comprehensive restoration of the tower and the addition of new colored exterior lighting using new energy-saving technology that allows the colors of the tower's exterior lighting to be controlled.
