Our tour begins at Al-Azhar Mosque, the oldest surviving Fatimid monument in Egypt and one of the most important and famous mosques in Egypt and the Islamic world. For more than a millennium, it has functioned as both an academic university and a congregational mosque. It was transformed into a modern university in 1961. Its faculties and institutes are spread throughout Egypt, with 62 university faculties and five branches. Al-Azhar still has a significant impact on Egyptian society as well as many other Islamic countries.
Near the ancient Al-Azhar Mosque, whose role is not limited to worship, is the Mosque of Al-Hussein, may God be pleased with him, which we will visit. "History indicates that the head of Imam Al-Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, was transferred from Ascalon to Cairo on the eighth of Jumada Al-Akhira in the year 548 AH (1153 AD). It was carried in a crypt to the Emerald Palace, and then buried in the dome of the shrine, which was built especially for him in the year 549 AH (1154 AD).
When Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi took over the rule of Egypt in the year 1171 AD, he established a school next to this shrine, and entrusted its supervision to the Baha’i jurist from Damascus. The current mosque, known as the Mosque of Our Master Hussein, replaced that school. The shrine and the Ayyubid school were seen by the traveler Ibn Jubayr at the beginning of the Ayyubid era in the year 587 AH / 1182 AD, and he described them wonderfully.”
