It depicts Ramses II standing. The statue was discovered in 1820 by explorer Giovanni Battista Caviglia in the Great Temple of Mit Rahina, near Memphis, the ancient Egyptian capital... The statue of Ramses II was originally located in Giza's Mit Rahina neighbourhood.
The statue was found divided into six large, separate parts. Initial attempts to reassemble them failed, but with persistence, he eventually reassembled it. In March 1955, the late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser ordered its transfer to Bab al-Hadid Square in Cairo, later renamed Ramses Square.
