Muhammad Ali, who was born into a Muslim family in Macedonia, enlisted in the Ottoman army in Egypt in 1801, where he was the deputy commander of the Albanian battalion and helped drive out the French. Following the death of the Albanian commander, he was succeeded by Muhammad Ali, whose charismatic and strict personality paved the way for him to assume the position of governor in 1805.
He decided to deliver a decisive blow to the Mamluks to reassure himself in the event of an army withdrawal. He organized a grand celebration at the Citadel in Cairo to celebrate his son Tusun's assumption of command of the army. He invited approximately 500 Mamluk leaders, where they were feted and offered coffee and sweets before the Citadel gates were closed and the governor's soldiers opened fire on them with their rifles, killing all but one of them.
The Mamluks in Egypt came to an end as a result, and Muhammad Ali carried on with his modernizing efforts. When he died in Alexandria in 1849 at the age of 80, his family was the de facto ruler of Egypt, recognized by the Ottoman Empire.
