The pharaohs established a large city where the Babylonians made a settlement when they descended on Egypt; the Romans used the city as their defense center for both the maritime and tribal fronts facing any foreign aggressor against Egypt.
The museum is divided into two separate sections, one chronological and the other thematic.
It covers many time periods, such as ancient, pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, medieval Islamic, modern, and contemporary. The thematic sections include: the dawn of civilization, the Nile, writing, state and society, material culture, beliefs and thought, and the Royal Mummies Exhibition.
