Facts About The Grand Egyptian Museum
The New Egyptian Museum is an architectural masterpiece being built to attract more than five million tourists annually, due to the international standards that contributed to the construction of the museum, as well as the Pharaonic artifacts that will be seen by the world for the first time. The design of the GEM is characterized by the formation of triangular monoliths symbolizing the three pyramids; this includes both the facade of the museum clad in “gray alabaster stone” and all the entrances that welcome visitors.
The new Egyptian Museum is expected to have a grand opening similar to that of the Royal Mummies Parade. One of the world's largest museums that will be a destination for recreational and scientific tourism
A massive heritage gallery with 100,000 artifacts that will be displayed to the public for the first time
In addition, this huge tourist complex will be built to be the largest museum in Egypt. The New Egyptian Museum occupies a huge area estimated at 117 acres, giving visitors the opportunity to view the three pyramids and the archaeological area through the museum's glass facades.
The total cost of the development and opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum was estimated at 550 million dollars, of which the Japanese donor contributed 300 million dollars in the form of a soft loan. The companies implementing the new museum in Egypt were selected based on an architectural competition held in 2002, and the names of the winners were published in 2003:
The New Museum of Egypt has gone through several phases from the formation of the international joint committees to the present day, days before the grand opening:
Phase I (2002 - 2008) Phase I included all engineering studies of the project, layouts, setting up the committees, and finally organizing the design competition. The second phase (2005-2010) included preparing the site for construction and removing all occupations, then starting the foundation work for the conservation center to ensure the safe transportation of the mummies.
Phase III (2008 - 2022) The third phase began with the construction of the museum galleries, the Children's Museum, the cinema, the obelisk, and the tourist walkway. The idea for the New Egyptian Museum was conceived in 2002, followed by 20 years of planning and implementation, with international Egyptian cooperation, led by the Japanese funding agency JICA.
As for the museum's identity, Lebanese-Dutch designer Tarek Atrissi's design won the approval of the Egyptian jury in the museum display competition. The logo refers to the layout of the museum and its connection to the Three Pyramids, as well as the orange color to signify the phenomenon of the sun setting on the Egyptian monuments.
