History The first recorded thought of building a reservoir near Aswan was during the 11th century AD. At that time, the famous Arab mathematician Alhazen - known in the West as Alhazen - was invited by the Fatimid Caliph Al-Hakim Amr Allah to coordinate the utilization of the Nile flood. This was the first thought of constructing a dam on the Nile to hold back the flood waters.
