Saqqara is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Egypt. It is located in the Western Desert, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Cairo. Saqqara was the burial ground for the Pharaohs and their families from the 1st Dynasty to the 6th Dynasty (2686 BC - 2323 BC). The site is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest pyramid in Egypt. The Step Pyramid is surrounded by a complex of buildings, including the tomb of Imhotep, the architect of the pyramid.
