Information about Kenya

Kenya really is a country that stays with you. Somehow, it has it all — endless savannahs, wildlife that takes your breath away, and beaches on the Indian Ocean that make you forget there are other places in the world.

Almost everyone has heard of the Maasai Mara, of course, but when you see pictures of the Great Migration — millions of animals all at once — that’s when you really understand why people fly all the way to Africa just for that. And Mount Kenya, after which the whole country is named, simply towers majestically over everything.

Nairobi took me by surprise, personally. You sort of expect a typical capital city, but the place has a real vibe — young, bustling, international. No wonder it’s regarded as the economic hub for the whole of East Africa. Mombasa, on the other hand, is quite different: quieter, with that old Swahili spirit and the sea right on its doorstep.

But what really makes Kenya special is the diversity of its people. Over 40 different ethnic groups, each with its own language and traditions — you really notice this when travelling through the country. And the runners, of course. Kenyan long-distance runners are simply in a league of their own; there’s no other way to put it. Since gaining independence in 1963, the country has come a long way — and today it’s impossible to imagine Africa without it.
