In the morning, you'll be picked up from your hotel and your first stop will be the Zabaleen neighborhood. There are 6,000 tons of food waste, most of which is recycled food used to feed pigs, along with another 2,000 tons of non-recyclable waste, such as baby diapers, which are buried in public landfills in the governorates.
Garbage recycling plants are located in the Zabaleen neighborhood, including plastic bags and other solid items, such as perfume bottles, wine bottles, soft drinks bottles, and cardboard boxes. Learn more with our guide.
Following her complaint to the governor of Cairo, 5,000 families of garbage collectors were relocated to Mokattam Mountain, where they endured harsh conditions. The garbage collectors removed 2.5 million stones to build the monastery. The monastery features a hall consisting of semicircular terraces, below which lies the altar. Polish artisan Mario Khawaja has hand-carved figures into the hillside to adorn the cathedral.
Enjoy your lunch afterward, then move on to Coptic Cairo and visit the Jewish Temple and the most iconic of Egyptian churches, the Hanging Church. Built in the famous basilica style, the church was renovated several times during the Islamic era... First, under Harun al-Rashid, when Patriarch Anba Markos requested permission from the governor to renovate the church; second, under al-Aziz Billah, the Fatimid caliph, who gave the Syriac Patriarch permission to renovate all of Egypt's churches and repair any that had been damaged; and third, under al-Zahir li-I'zaz Din Allah.
You will be returned to your lodging at the conclusion of the trip.
