During the Roman occupation, it became a significant frontier, and the first fortress was constructed on the site of an earlier temple. Qasr Ibrim was a center for Nubian tribes until the 6th century, when they converted to Christianity in Egypt.

The winter months, from October to April, are ideal for visiting Egypt. The weather is mild and pleasant, though the evenings can get quite cool. December through January are peak tourist months, so expect to see a lot of people if you go during this time.
