The Hanging Church, the Citadel of Saladin up on its hill, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the chaos (the good kind) of Khan El Khalili Bazaar, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization — together they give you both the ancient and the everyday, side by side.
Heading south to explore Luxor and Aswan changes the pace of your trip. A private luxury Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is the easiest way to see Upper Egypt. Luxor is called the world's largest open air museum for good reason. There you can discover Karnak Temple. Located on the east bank of Thebes (modern Luxor). Karnak Temple alone could eat up half a day if you let it. Then there's Luxor Temple located on the east bank of the Nile River in Luxor (ancient Thebes), built around 1400 BCE. On the west bank of Luxor, you will discover these temples: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple carved into the cliffs, the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum, and the Valley of the Queens. And if you can drag yourself out of bed before sunrise. Do the hot air balloon ride. Floating over the temples and the Nile Valley as the light comes up is one of those things photos never quite capture.
Sail on towards Esna, then Aswan. It's quieter, greener in places, more relaxing. The wonderful Philae Temple located on Agilkia Island, also the Unfinished Obelisk gives you a strange glimpse into how these things were actually carved, and there is the High Dam, Elephantine Island, and the Nubian villages with their painted houses.
