Experience the vibrant Birqash Camel Market in Cairo, where you can witness the bustling trade of camels and immerse yourself in Egyptian culture. Discover the sights, sounds, and traditions of this unique marketplace.
Birqash Camel Market in Cairo
Having become increasingly necessary for the development of daily life, camels are imported by thousands from neighboring Sudan and taken to Birqash, the main camel market, which moved here from Cairo in 1995.
During their journey from Sudan, the first stop on the way to the market is in Daraw, north of Aswan, from which a large number of animals are transported by truck to Birqash.
Trading takes place every day but is more intense on Friday. The negotiations begin at dawn and business is already concluded before nine: we, therefore, recommend leaving early. Getting there by public transport is complicated because there are no direct means of transportation, so the best solution is to book a taxi for the whole morning.

Camels in the Pyramids
The merchants look serious, are dressed in galabiya (tunics) and turbans, and stand in groups or sit on mats around trays with teapots, and negotiate on the price, while the herdsmen keep the beasts in line. Each camel is sold with an official booklet that indicates the state of health, age, and provenance, recognizable by the marks imprinted on the skin. According to the herdsmen, a good camel has a pronounced hump and strong bones.
