Details about Tomb of Ramses XI

  • 05 16, 2023

It is one of the tombs that were discovered in the Valley of the King's region in Egypt. Ramses XI is one of the pharaohs who ruled Egypt. Ramses ruled Egypt from 1107 until 1077 BC, and he is one of the members of the Egyptian Twenty Dynasty.

The tomb of Ramses XI is 104.09 meters long and has been discovered since ancient times. It was discovered again by John Romer in 1978 and 1980. The sarcophagus of King Ramses XI has not been found. The tomb is known as KV4 and was originally built to house Ramses XI.

Ramses XI was the last king of the 20th Dynasty.

But the work was not finished when King Ramses XI died, and he was not even buried there. When King Ramses died, it was the beginning of the renaissance of good priests.

Benozam I, the high priest of Amun at Thebes, proceeded to rob the tomb so that he could be buried there.

A cartouche was found in the tomb indicating the purpose of the priest. After that, the priest gave up on that idea, and he too was not buried in it.

The reason for the fame of Ramses XI's tomb is that it was the last tomb built in the Valley of the Kings. In addition, another reason is the use of the cemetery as a residence for the workers who are vandalizing the city.

Where the priests of Amon ordered some of the workers to spread corruption and chaos and sabotage a funeral city located near the area. Therefore, the workers took the cemetery as their dwelling, and those events were in the period of the third decay era that passed over Egypt.

It is also famous because it is considered one of the first tombs that were opened for the public to visit.
