Asyūṭ’s history dates to the Badarian prehistoric amount, named for the location, wherever the remains of that predynastic cultural section were 1st excavated. The region was a field between the tenth and eleventh dynasties within the 1st Intermediate amount (c. 2130–1939 BC). Egypt’s southern frontier lay at Cusae in Asyūṭ throughout the Second Intermediate amount (c. 1630–1540 BC). Akhenaten (reigned 1353–36 BC) moved his residence to the location of Tell al-Amarna, on the Japanese bank of the river fifty miles (80 km) downstream from Syut (modern Asyūṭ city).
Agriculture is the main activity of the governorate; cotton, grains, vegetables, and lentils are the most important crops, and chickens are raised. There are not any major cities outside the governorate’s capital, Asyūṭ (q.v.). The Al-Ibrāhīmīyah Canal, branching off the river simply north of Asyūṭ town, flows in the Associate in Nursing previous watercourse channel on the western facet of the vale and irrigates the agricultural land. Copts represent a substantial part of the population of the governorate. space 600 sq. miles (1,553 sq. km). Pop. (2006) 3,441,597.
