happy international mother's day

Mother's Day is one of the most important occasions that people around the world celebrate annually, which coincides with the advent of the spring season, expressing their love for their mothers with gifts, roses, and greeting cards, as an attempt by them to make her happy, honor and thank her for what she made in the years of her life for the sake of the comfort and happiness of her children. On many days and in various cities of the world.

But it has been suggested that the idea of honoring mothers dates back to ancient Egyptians, who were among the early civilizations to celebrate motherhood.

Ancient civilizations

Some people may think that Mother's Day is a modern, new event, but researchers have discovered that this celebration existed among prehistoric civilizations and that the ancient Egyptians were the first to celebrate Mother's Day as a sacred holiday, and they considered the statue of Isis carrying her son Horus as a symbol of this occasion.

This celebration was linked to the flood of the Nile, the origin of life, fertility, and development, just as a mother gives life to her children. They cared about the mother and the woman, and their temples in Dandara and Samanoud witnessed how they celebrated the woman and the mother and presented her to the world as a saint.

Regarding the beginning of the idea of Mother's Day, the professor of archeology says that the idea was transmitted by generations and moved from the ancient Egyptian civilization to other civilizations, and it continued to circulate and successive until it appeared in its current form, adding that some historians believe that the idea appeared among the Greeks and celebrated it in the Spring Festival, believing that the Spring Festival that blooms In it, the flowers symbolize the life that the mother provides to her children, and from here the idea of celebrating Mother's Day appeared to coincide with the Spring_Feast for its symbolism of the Pharaohs.

Modern history

Mother’s Day is a widely held celebration in Egypt, and despite not being a public holiday, finds a place in Egyptian pop culture with songs like Soad Hosny and Salah Jaheen’s famous Sabah Al-Kheir Ya Mawlaty. The origin of Mother’s Day in Egypt is attributed to brothers Mostafa and Ali Amin, who founded the Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper and thus began a long tradition of Arab women making us all feel extra guilty for one day of the year.

The story goes that Ali Amin proposed the concept of Mother’s Day through a well-received opinion article. Another story credits the Amins’ proposal to a widowed mother who came to visit Mostafa Amin and told him how she had dedicated her life to her children, only to be left alone after they had grown up and become independent. Mostafa Amin then proposed a day to repay society’s debt to mothers in Egypt.

How do Egyptians celebrate Mother's Day?

Initially, not everyone could agree on how to celebrate mothers in Egypt; some proposed an entire week for the occasion, while others contested the need for it. Most readers, however, agreed to one day of celebrating mothers around the Arab world and Egypt; the proposed day was 21 March, which is also the first day of spring.

Mother’s Day

Egyptians celebrate visiting the mother and presenting gifts in recognition of the role of a righteous mother in the life of every human being. Ideal mothers who strive to highlight the value of loyalty and sacrifice are also honored at the official and informal levels.

In 1991 it was decided to celebrate the honor of ideal mothers nationwide on Mother’s Day, and in 2010 the Ministry decided on Social solidarity forming a committee headed by the head of the Central Administration for Social Welfare to select the candidates for the Family Day contest at the level of the social solidarity directorates in the governorates, in preparation for honoring the first three exemplary mothers and fathers who won the title who meet the specified conditions and criteria.
