According to Christian legend, the Holy Family is said to have travelled through this region and stayed at the Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church location (Abu Serga). Although the majority of the churches' existing structures were constructed after the Muslim invasion of Egypt in the 7th century, Coptic Cairo was a stronghold for Christianity in Egypt up to the Islamic era.

The Ben Ezra Synagogue, also known as the Synagogue of the Levantines or the El-Geniza Synagogue, is located in Old Cairo, Egypt. Folklore in the area claims that it is situated where infant Moses was discovered.
This was the synagogue whose abandoned Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and religious texts were discovered in its geniza, or store chamber, in the 19th century.
