You will be picked up from your hotel in Cairo by our representative and meet your Egyptologist guide to start a new adventure in Medieval Cairo starting with the Citadel of Saladin, or as we say in Arabic Salah Al Din Citadel built by the Muslim leader Salah Al Din in the 12th Century to be the strongest fortification for Cairo and also to be a residence for the government and the army. The Citadel comprises many buildings but the most impressive of them is the Mosque of Mohamed Ali which is similar to the Turkish style of architecture art. The Citadel continued major development during the following 700 years since it was built by Saladin specially during the Mamluk Sultanate, followed by the construction projects of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th century. Muhammad Ali Pasha demolished many of the older buildings in the 19th Century and built new palaces and monuments all across the site till it has been proclaimed by UNESCO as part of the world hiritage site in 1976 and opened to the public officially in 1983.
