Top 15 things to do in Cairo, Egypt

  • 05 16, 2023

Egypt's capital is Cairo. Cairo is home to around nine million people, with an additional ten million residing just beyond the city limits. This is the largest urban region in Africa and the Middle East.It is situated on the Nile River, where the desert meets the Nile delta. Giza is located on the west bank of the Nile River, about 5 kilometres southwest of Cairo, and the two towns appear to merge.

Cairo is known as "the city of a thousand minarets" because of the abundance of Islamic architecture. The majority of Cairo's residents are Muslims, although roughly 10% of the population is Christian, belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church you can visit it with our Egypt day tours.

Cairo is the largest city in Africa and the Middle East, and is a must-visit destination for any traveler with our Egypt shore excursions. With ancient monuments, bustling markets, and vibrant nightlife, there is no shortage of things to do in Cairo. Here is a list of the top 15 things to do in Cairo with our Egypt travel packages, Egypt:

1- The pyramids of Giza

The Giza pyramids are not only the most popular tourist destination in Cairo, but also in Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza is another intact ancient wonder of the world. This pyramid, along with others on the Giza plateau, is one of the most famous sights in the world.

2-Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum has the world's most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities. The pure gold mask and gilded sarcophagi of Tutankhamun, the Royal Mummies chamber, and an incredible amount of sculptures, jewels, and riches are all highlights of a visit.

3-Islamic Cairo

The historic heart of Cairo is Islamic Cairo. This location is home to one of the most extensive collections of historic architecture in the Islamic world. Cairo is one of the world's oldest Islamic towns, with several mosques, madrassas, fortresses, and tombs dating from Egypt's Islamic period (639 to the early 16th century).
There is a lot to see and do in Islamic Cairo. It's a somewhat huge region near the city centre. You might spend days exploring the maze of alleyways of Islamic Cairo, but for most visitors, viewing the attractions is enough.

4-Salah el din citadel

The Citadel of Saladin commands a prominent location on the Mokattam hills in downtown Cairo. This was Egypt's seat of government for about 700 years (from the 13th to the 19th century). It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1976.Because of its prominent location atop the Mokattam hills, the Citadel can be seen from practically anywhere in Cairo.

5-Al-Moez Street for the religion of God Al-Futima

This is a significant roadway with a lengthy name. This is one of Cairo's oldest streets, known as al-Muizz. It spans north-south across Islamic Cairo and features some of the city's most notable monuments.Walking around al-Muizz was one of our favourite things to do in Cairo. In my perspective, it may be sensory overload in a positive manner. Yes, it's loud and chaotic, but the people are nice, the street food is great, and walking down one of Cairo's oldest streets is a unique experience.

6-Climb the minaret at Bab Zuweila

Bab Zuweila is the southern gate on Fatimid Cairo's walls. It comes from the 11th and 12th centuries and is one of the few intact gates in Cairo's Old City. Walk up many flights of steps for a wonderful view from the gate's terrace. Climb both minarets for a beautiful perspective of old Cairo and al-Muizz street.

7-Khan Al-Khalili

The famous retail bazaar in Islamic Cairo is Khan el-Khalili. It is located immediately off al-Muizz street. I was looking forward to Khan el-Khalili, but it disappointed me. This market is loaded with touristic goods, and the majority of what is for sale, according to our guide Laila, is from China. It's worth a brief visit, but I believe al-Muizz street, the tent market, and the side streets off al-Muizz are far more intriguing.

8-Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan

The Sultan Hassan Mosque-Madrassa is a massive mosque at the Citadel's base. During the Mamluk period, it was constructed between 1356 and 1363.

9-Al-Azhar Park

Al-Azhar is a peaceful green park in the heart of Cairo. This is a nice area to go for a walk and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets.

10-Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo is located in Old Cairo, in the city's south. The first villages here were established in the sixth century BC. Many of the attractions here date back to Egypt's Christian era, but you can also see a synagogue and Africa's first mosque.

11-Cave Church

The Cave Church, also known as the Monastery of Saint Simon, is located in Cairo's Mokattam hills. This church has a capacity of 20,000 people, making it the biggest in the Middle East.

12-garbage city

Garbage City gets its moniker from the vast number of garbage collectors that dwell in the area. The Zabbaleen are the offspring of farmers who fled to Cairo from Upper Egypt in the 1940s to escape poverty and poor crops. They moved in the Mokattam hills and began sorting rubbish for a living. Their population has swelled to at least 30,000 individuals over the years, a whole town that makes a living by sorting rubbish. The Zabbaleen are predominantly Coptic Christians.

13-Walk across the Nile on Qasr El Nil Bridge

the Nile on Qasr El Nil Bridge is Cairo's first bridge over the Nile River. It links Tahrir Square with Gezira Island.

14-Cairo Tower

Visit theCairo Tower for the greatest perspective of the city. You enjoy 360° views of the city from Gezira Island in Zamelek. On a clear day, the Pyramids of Giza may be seen.

15-One day trip to Dahshur, Memphis and Saqqara

The ancient Egyptians honed their pyramid-building talents in Dahshur. Numerous of the original pyramids were built here, and it took several attempts to get things right. Visit the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, forerunners of the Giza Pyramids.

Memphis was Egypt's first capital city. A fast visit here includes a tour of the open-air museum.

Saqqara was the necropolis for the city of Memphis. The famed Step Pyramid of Djoser and the world's oldest complete stone building complex may be found here.
